THE Yorkshire Building Society is set to embark on a bike race with a difference in celebration of its 150th anniversary.

A bespoke penny farthing bicycle was at Shambles in York as part of a trip to historic landmarks and destinations in the UK, with the tour serving as a call to arms for charities across North Yorkshire to apply for a £10,000 donation from the fund.

The Society has pledged £150,000 to leave a lasting impact in the communities it serves. Charities can apply with winning applicants receiving £10,000.

Yorkshire Building Society’s chief executive Chris Pilling said: “We are proud to commemorate our milestone anniversary by helping charities make a positive difference in their communities.

"Colleagues from our York, Feasegate branch will hop in the saddle of the penny farthing as part of the tour to raise awareness of the Lasting Legacy Fund. The charming penny farthing bike pays homage to our past, whilst our charity fund will benefit future generations.”

Initially 30 charities will be chosen from all applications received. Members of the public will then be able to vote online to choose the winning 15 projects that will make the biggest difference to their communities.

To apply visit www.ybs.co.uk/legacy. Applications must be completed by September 5.
