A CHARITY which helps support wounded or sick soldiers will receive a £22,000 boost from last year's chairman of North Yorkshire County Council.

Councillor Bernard Bateman chose ABF The Soldiers’ Charity to benefit from his fundraising activities during his term of office, which ran from May 2013 to May 2014.

Activities included social functions, a gala ball, and a concert, and the money, which will be presented to the charity at a ceremony at Catterick Garrison next month, will be mainly be used to fund activities at the Personnel Recovery Unit (PRU) in Cambrai Lines at Catterick.

Coun Bateman said: "I am so glad to have been able to do something in my year of office to help the brave men and women who suffer injuries in the service of their country. Their selflessness and bravery deserve all the support we as a community can give."
