GARDENERS are putting the finishing touches to their displays ahead of a charity event in aid of York's St Leonard's Hospice.

Barbara Eccles will again be throwing open her garden in Mount Park, Riccall, for the annual Riccall Open Gardens.

It is one of a dozen gardens in the village that will be open between 1pm and 5pm on Sunday.

Barbara has been involved since the first organiser of the event, her neighbour Janet Pickles, of the St Leonard’s Hospice Riccall Support Group, asked her to take part.

The open gardens boast various features, including ponds and woodland, alpines and shrubs, another full of herbs, a couple exhibiting ‘work in progress’ where advice would be welcome – and even one with the added attraction of a display of Meccano models.

There are plants on sale at several of the gardens, and some offer refreshments.

Programmes giving entrance to all the gardens cost £2, and are available on the day at any of the gardens or on the village green. Accompanied children under 14 have free entry. All the gardens will be marked with an identifying letter and balloons.

Barbara said: "I’m always happy to help the Hospice, which does such good work."
