A WOMAN from Acomb is appealing for help to rescue stray dogs in Romania.

Sue Grainger, who runs scuba diving company Overland Underwater, hopes to raise funds to give dogs in Romania a new life through her Discover Scuba taster sessions at the York and Harrogate centres.

Sue first became involved with the cause when she adopted Katy, a Romanian German Shepherd, from a shelter in Romania three months ago.

She said: “There is a massive problem in Romania with stray dogs on the streets. While many residents feed them, others attack them in unimaginable ways”.

Sue admits she was worried about adopting one of these dogs and had reservations over what state Katy would be in when she arrived.

She said: “Katy was very frightened of men to start with and has obviously suffered abuse in the past. But she is quickly learning to trust people and is a fantastic dog.”

After adopting Katy, Sue helped found the Romanian Rescue Appeal. Now she hopes to raise the funds to get the dogs in the appeal’s care micro-chipped and vaccinated and to arrange their transport to the UK.

The Discover Scuba taster sessions will cost £25. To book your session contact Overland Underwater on 01904 799778. Gift certificates for the sessions are available and children must be eight years and over.
