THREE teenagers have secured a £500 grant for a project helping disabled people find volunteering opportunities in York.

The group helped Special Needs Activity and Play Provision for York (SNAPPY) get the funding from Lloyds Bank’s Money For Life Challenge for their project, Senior Snappy.

The Senior Snappy team, made up of three 18 and 19-year-olds from York, will help people prepare for interviews and build the skills required for the workplace, with the wider aim of building confidence and breaking down barriers.

SNAPPY, which has an office in Lowther Street, is one of 300 UK projects to receive a grant as part of the Money For Life Challenge, which helps students run money management projects in their local communities.

Matthew Wegglesworth, 19, who runs Senior Snappy, with Jonathan Wheatley and Liam Sokolow, both 18, said: “We really want to help young people with disabilities to feel part of the community and find the opportunities that they’re looking for so this grant means we’re able to do that on a wider scale.”

Anne Stamp, project sponsor of the Money for Life Challenge team from SNAPPY, said: “Strong money management skills are crucial to navigating everyday life and we are delighted that our students have created their own money management project to help others.

“The team is very excited about putting their ideas into practice and we are looking forward to seeing the impact they will have.”

SNAPPY will spend the next four months working to impress the Money For Life Challenge judges, who will choose the best teams to present at the national final in England on April 2.

The national winners will receive £1,000 to donate to a registered charity of their choice plus £50 shopping vouchers for every team member.
