A YORK-based charity which gives independence to people with mobility issues has appointed a new chairman.

Shopmobility York has announced that Trevor Phillips, who has been a trustee for the charity for 12 years, has taken over from Shan Braund, who held the role since its formation in 1999. Trevor said: “Shan did an excellent job and we were very sorry to see her go, but she felt it was time to step down.”

Mr Phillips worked for City of York Council for 30 years before retiring, and first came across Shopmobility York as director of environmental services for the council.

He said: “It really is a wonderful scheme for disabled people, giving them independence to get out and about rather than having to staying indoors. We also work closely with the city council and see our service as an integral part of the council’s Integrated Transport Strategy, affording access for disabled people into the city centre.”

Shopmobility York hires out wheelchairs and electric scooters for a low charge, and works with the council to help improve the transport strategy.
