A team of safety-conscious workers have boosted the coffers of St Leonard’s Hospice in York to the tune of £5,000.

A work team from Northern Powergrid that lays underground cables has been named the company’s Safety Champions after going a whole year without recording a single safety incident.

To mark their achievement, Northern Powergrid, which is responsible for delivering electricity to 3.8 million customers across north-east England, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, gave the team £5,000 to donate to a charity of its choice.

The workers, who work from centres in Leeds and Castleford, agreed to give the money to St Leonard’s Hospice because one of their team members received care from the Tadcaster Road centre.

Annie Keogh, corporate fundraiser at St Leonard’s, said: “It’s really good news that the team had such a great record of safety – and that they have so generously agreed to donate it to the hospice. We are very grateful to them and to Northern Powergrid.”
