A CHARITY shop in York is to hold its first art exhibition.

Members of York Art Society will display their works at the recently opened St Leonard’s Hospice furniture store, in Heworth.

The exhibition opens on Friday with an evening event from 6pm to 8pm. It will be in place at the shop for the following two weeks.

There will be a range of artwork on display by members of the society, which was established in 1921 “to encourage the practice of art in York and the surrounding area, hold occasional private and public exhibitions of members’ work, and organise lectures for interested parties”.

It has about 200 members. Most of them are amateur artists.

The shop, at 1 The Village, opened on November 5 and sells good-quality furniture that has been donated to the hospice. The store – and the art exhibition – is open daily except Wednesday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Maria Aebi, manager at the shop, said: “We are very pleased that we are able to offer York Art Society space for their work at our new shop, and we are sure that they will prove a great draw for our customers.”
