A HAPPY couple from York have given a huge boost to a local school after telling their wedding guests to make donations instead of buying presents for their big day.

Dawn May, 52, and her husband Paul were married last month and decided to use the day to help special needs school Applefields, in Tang Hall.

Now the pair have been to the school to hand over a cheque for £1,318 to head teacher George Gilmore.

He said: “I am delighted that Dawn and Paul have chosen to support the school in such a selfless way – it is very humbling to think that they and their guests have made such a generous donation to support our work.

‘‘Dawn has supported the school through a variety of fundraising activities in recent years and this is another example of her enormous generosity and kindness.

“This very kind donation will be used to purchase specialist equipment for the children who attend Applefields School.

‘‘We are very grateful to Dawn and Paul for their amazing generosity.”
