SIXTH Formers at an East Yorkshire school have been learning to cook meals from out-of-sell-by-date food in Master Chef-style challenges using ingredients donated by Tesco’s.

Students at Pocklington School competed in pairs working against the clock to create meals from ingredients they had no prior knowledge of. Judges from the school and Tesco’s then sampled the dishes and marked them on technical skill, appearance and taste.

First, four pairs of Lower Sixth Formers created dishes from ingredients including pork, peppers and sweet potatoes, strawberries and mangoes, plus a few store cupboard essentials.

Tiger Brash and Peter Massey’s pork and mango curry with a side of Indian spiced vegetable crisps was the narrow winner.

In the second contest, three pairs of competed to produce the best dish from ingredients including cabbage and leek; mushrooms; crème fraiche; chicken breasts; black kale and egg noodles. Seb El Jassar and Rufus Mills’ Singapore chicken noodle stir fry was declared the winning dish.

Cookery teacher Anne-Marie Salmon said: “The students come to my after-school cookery club and have made tremendous progress. There’s always a lot of teamwork and friendly competition - and this challenge was no exception. I’m very grateful to Tesco for getting so enthusiastically involved.”
