POLITICS and law students at York College received a visit from Lord Best, the former Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Housing Trust, last week.

The aim of the visit, which was part of the Peers in School programme, was to enthuse students about the work and role of the House of Lords as well as politics in general.

Discussion involved topics such as Brexit, the recent budget, sexual harassment, sustainability, cross-faith representation and housing - a particular area of interest for the peer.

A-level politics student John-Paul Duddy was inspired by the talk, saying: "Everything I learned in my AS-level studies about the legislative processes was explained so clearly. I want to study politics at university and Lord Best's talk has sparked my interest even further."

Since the programme was launched in 2007, members of the House of Lords have spoken to around 50,000 school and college pupils around the country.
