A BRICKLAYING student at York College has been recognised for his outstanding work.

Josh Patten, 17, has been awarded ‘Marshalltown Student of the Year’ in the Marshalltown Tools 4 Schools achievement programme.

At the end of the last academic year, construction tutors at York College nominated Josh to receive the prestigious award.

During a special gathering of students in the college’s Construction Centre, Rob Holmes, head of construction, presented Josh with a Marshalltown trowel and certificate, saying: "Josh continues to work hard and is excelling on the Level 2 Bricklaying course. He has a great attitude towards his learning and should feel proud that his tutors chose him for the award."

The Marshalltown Tools 4 Schools programme for schools and colleges has been running since 2006. The programme is aimed at helping the tradesmen of the future and provides trainees with the best tools for the job.

Josh was surprised to receive the award.

He said: "I didn’t expect my name to be called out and I’m especially pleased that my tutors thought I was worthy of it.

"When I left school I knew I wanted to go into bricklaying and I really enjoy my course. I am looking for an apprenticeship next year and this award will look really good on my CV."
