AN HISTORIC building standing in the shadow of York Minster has been converted into a new nursery.

The White House, a Georgian town house which stands at number seven Minster Yard, was opened by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, yesterday.

The Grade II listed building will house the Minster School’s nursery department, offering indoor and outdoor play, as well as new junior music rooms and other facilities to support the school’s three to seven-year-olds.

Head teacher Alex Donaldson said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the Archbishop to open the new infant facilities for us.

“It’s a beautiful piece of work and should provide our youngest learners with an inspirational place to start their school career right in the lea of York Minster.”

Dr Sentamu said: “The Minster School has created a space that is sure to enhance and excite learning in the youngest of students.”
