ACROSS North Yorkshire schools reported improvements on last year.

Cllr Patrick Mulligan, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Schools, said: “From the early indications, the results are a tribute to the hard work of students, the support of families, the dedication of school staff and the quality of teaching in North Yorkshire.’’

Schools in the county also have strong systems of support in place to assist students who may have missed out on their first choices to gain alternative places through the university clearing system, or to help them to look for alternative routes into employment, training or apprenticeships.

Cllr Mulligan said: “Large numbers of university places are still available and students can still get places even if they didn’t reach their grades. In addition, students who have performed better than expected are helped to apply for more prestigious courses and institutions.”

At Sherburn High 99 per cent of students passed their course; 62 per cent at A*-B 50 per cent of our maths students attained a grade A* and the average grade across all subjects was a grade B.

Head teacher, Maria Williams, said: “A-levels are such an important milestone in a student’s life and employers and universities will look at them closely.

"It’s fantastic to see our students achieve such outstanding results that will stay with them throughout their lives. The results reflect the continual improvement of the school and the incredible hard work and commitment from the staff and students.”

Meanwhile at Tadcaster Grammar School, head teacher, Martyn Sibley said: "We are delighted to report that over two thirds of all A-levels taken were graded at A*, A or B which reflects the wonderful performance of our students.

"It has been great to see the vast majority of students rewarded by achieving their first choice of university with some notable individual successes including entrance for four students to Oxford University as well as University of St Andrews, Durham and Loughborough amongst many others. A growing number have also secured higher degree apprenticeships in business and finance. Congratulations to all our students, we wish them every success for the future."
