THE SPORTING stars of Sherburn High have been celebrated at a bumper awards ceremony, with an England rugby league star handing out the awards and a message of support from a world champion cyclist.

On Thursday, July 13 the school hosted a sports awards evening, and Leeds Rhinos and England Rugby League icon, Jamie Peacock MBE was on hand to give out the awards.

The packed event, which welcomed around 200 students and their families, saw PE GCSEs presented as well as awards for Most Improved, Individual Performance, Team of the Year, All Rounder and Respect.

Jamie Peacock also spoke to the students about what it takes to be successful sportsperson, and told them to "listen to the positive people around them", not the negative ones.

In honour of the late Wayne Isherwood, a former head of PE at Sherburn High, two new trophies were presented to Eliza Dulson and Ben Powell, winners of the octathlon and decathlon competitions that Wayne introduced at Sherburn.

The winner of the Neal French Sports Personality of the Year Award was Year 11 student, Natalie Stephenson-Quayle, who was recognised for displaying the values of resilience, determination, hard work, positivity, respect.

Natalie also received a personalised video message of congratulations on her award from world champion cyclist and Olympic gold medal hopeful, Lizzie Deignan nee Armistead.
