A TEACHER is to run 45 miles from Bridlington to York at daybreak in memory of a much-loved colleague who was struck down with a rare form of blood cancer, aged just 39.
Richard Mann, head of music at All Saints RC School in Nunnery Lane, York said the sudden loss of music teacher Jodie Cappleman was a huge shock to all pupils and staff.
As Miss Cappleman also taught at Bridlington School, where she was a former pupil, Mr Mann has pledged to run from there and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
"Jodie was an inspirational teacher, much loved by her pupils and colleagues, who were all deeply shocked at her early death," Mr Mann said.
"She was a wonderful person with a passion for music, a great saxophonist and was absolutely adored by her pupils.
"She was involved in many aspects and totally immersed in school life. For example, she rustled up a set out of nothing for musicals we put on.
"When she became ill she was so brave. She didn't make a fuss and was always a wonderful person to be around.
" It was heartbreaking for all us when she died, a tragic loss. She was a dear friend to many."
Since Miss Cappleman's death in February, Mr Mann has wanted to arrange an event .
"I came up with the idea of Sunrise 2 Sportsday, so as the sun rises in Bridlington on July 7, I will set off running to York. The idea is to get to York University Athletics track by 3pm where All Saints School is holding its annual sports day.
"Although I have done several charity ultra marathons, this is quite a challenge to get there in time."
"Everyone has rallied round to pledge, which just shows how loved Jodie was," Mr Mann added. "And being so creative, she would have loved the day and made the bunting."
Mr Mann is certainly being cheered on. Within one week of setting up his justgiving page he smashed his £1,000 target at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sunrise2sportsday
