SPORTS facilities at a York secondary school have been given a £1 million boost.

Millthorpe and nearby schools in Southbank, along with the local community, will benefit from a full size multi-use games area (MUGA), which organisers hope will be ready by September 2018.

City of York Council agreed to fund the all year round MUGA as part of the expansion of nearby Scarcroft Primary, which is necessary because of increasing numbers of children in the area.

Millthorpe will shortly set up a consultation exercise with parents and members of the local community, to work out where the facility will be located on the school site.

“This will be a very welcome addition to the sports facilities at Millthorpe, as well as to other schools and those people interested in sport in the South Bank area,” said Edwin Thomas, chairman of the South Bank Academy Trust which currently comprises Millthorpe, Scarcroft and Knavesmire schools.

“The MUGA will be used throughout the year for a variety of sports by schoolchildren and, outside of the school day and in school holidays, by members of the community.”

Car parking at Millthorpe will also be adjusted to allow additional spaces for users of the sporting facility.

“This will greatly enrich sports provision in the area,” said Mr Thomas.

As previously reported, the plans were agreed by City of York Council last year.

At the time, the council’s director for education Jon Stonehouse said his department would do more work on where the large MUGA should be, and would be speaking to people in the community about their preferences.
