PUPILS at Bootham School in York have been giving poetry the silent treatment.

A new book, In The Silence, was launched this week featuring poems written by students at the independent school.

The poetry reflects moments in Biblical stories where there was what the book describes as “that precious, priceless and often powerful silence”.

The students were asked to contribute to the book by YoYo, a youth charity which supports the communication of the Christian faith. Tony Bower, from YoYo, said, “The students from Bootham School were a pleasure to teach and a joy to work with. This book is a testament not only to their skills as writers but to their depth of understanding and empathy.” Tracey Copestake, head of religious education at Bootham, said: “Silence is an important part of Quaker worship and students experience the value of quiet reflection during our morning school assemblies. The poetry they wrote showed wonderful sensitivity and creativity, and I would like to thank Tony and his team for all their work.”

The book costs £3.99 and all the money raised will support the work of YoYo. Copies are available from YoYo or from Bootham School, email office@boothamschool or phone 01904 623261.
