Delighted children met animals for the first time when a mobile farm was set up at their nursery.

Pre-school children from the city's Happy Jays nursery were able to feed and pet piglets, lambs and calves from Purple Pig Farm.

The 32 children, aged between three and five-years-old, were seeing some of the animals up close for the first time.

Debbie Prescott, deputy manager at the York nursery, said: "They come to visit us from Thirsk about once a year so the children can get some hands on experience with farm animals.

"We are on an industrial estate here, so this is for them to become a bit more familiar with the animals.

"It was great because they come and set up a little farm in the garden and the children love it."
