A YORK primary school pupil has made it into the final ten in a national competition to find the Young Journalist of the Year.

Mary Betteridge, aged ten, is in the final of the competition run by pen company STABILO and First News.

Mary, a pupil at St Wifrid’s RC School, impressed the judges with an article about her traffic concerns.

STABILO’s Vanya Hunter said: “It was such a tough job whittling down the hundreds of entries to just ten finalists. We really do feel that we have uncovered some real talent.

“For STABILO, encouraging children to put pen to paper is paramount; we really want to help the young writing stars of the future to keep developing their talent.”

The winner will receive a column on the First News’website and products for every member of their class.
