GREEN-FINGERED youngsters have showed off their blossoming gardening talents by designing planting beds for shoppers.

Pupils from six York primary schools showed they were bursting with design talent by creating the displays at Monks Cross.

The shopping centre teamed up with Askham Bryan College and the Butterfly Conservation group and invited each of the schools taking part to submit a garden design.

College experts tracked down plants based on the pupils’ designs and took advice from the Butterfly Conservation team on how to make the garden butterfly friendly.

The schools involved in the garden-design scheme were Haxby Road Academy, Stockton-on-the-Forest Primary School, Huntington Primary School, Hempland Primary School, New Earswick Primary School and Yearsley Grove Primary School.

The winning garden out of the six designs submitted will be chosen over the summer holidays.
