YOUNGSTERS got a real buzz out of a competition to name City fo York Council’s i-Travel mascot.

Entries ranged from Mr Hexagon to Beesafe.

But the winning entry, Yorbee, was put forward by both Grace Robinson, seven, and Isobel Wright, nine, from Clifton with Rawcliffe Primary School. The newly named travel mascot then made a beeline for the school to present the two pupils with a prize.

Coun Janet Looker, cabinet member for education at City of York Council, said: “We received a huge response from all schools across York, with lots of very good entries.”

Funded through a Local Sustainable Transport fund government grant, the i-Travel York programme carries the message of travelling around York in a more sustainable way.

Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability at the council, said: “The quality of the entries and the enthusiasm of the children has been fantastic.

“It is apparent from their entry forms that they appreciate how important it is to walk or cycle to school.”
