Loko steam to even honours

YORK Lokomotiv began their first season in the Rugby League Conference with a well-fought 26-26 draw away to Bridlington Bulls.

Lokos boss Paul McDermott had said he wasn't sure what to expect of the Conference's Yorkshire division, but he got an early pointer as Brid went ahead, scoring from the first set of six, before the new York side had even touched the ball.

But the Lokos dusted themselves off and put in some good work and hard tackling, keeping in touch with the home team throughout.

Tom Dunmore, who has turned out for York City Knights in recent years, scored the Lokos' first try, finishing off a move created by winger Paul Cross.

Dunmore then returned the favour, putting a grubber kick into the corner for his winger to pounce on.

In the second half, the Lokos pack took the game by the scruff of the neck with Chris Corr driving the ball time and again and Julian MacBride doing the same, forcing his way over the try-line despite three Brid defenders on his back.

The try of the match, though, came from 16-year-old Tyler Dawson, who ended a flowing move by going in under the sticks to put Lokos in front for the first time.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Brid scored a scrappy try with ten minutes remaining to put them two points in front.

But the York side did not give in, and fought their way up the field where they gained a penalty which Dunmore calmly slotted over to level the scores.

The men of the match, in what was a fine game played in hot conditions, were Corr and captain Paul Fairclough.

The Lokos begin their home campaign, at York RI's ground, against Scarborough Pirates on Friday, kick off 7.30pm.
