THE annual Community Pride awards celebrate the great and the good of York.

They recognise mums and dad who have gone above and beyond at home, teachers who put in the extra hours for their pupils, and youngsters who battle against the odds.

A steady flow of entries have been sent in to The Press since they were launched in March, but there is still time for people to nominate unsung heroes.

So, if you know of anyone who fits into one or more of our 12 categories, give them the recognition they deserve by putting their name forward.

There is still more than two months to go before the July 17 deadline, and more than enough time for people to write in and tell us about the people they would like to see honoured in categories, including Spirit of Youth, Health Service Hero, Child of the Year, Public Sector Hero, Teacher of the Year and Sporting Hero.

There have been some inspirational nominations so far this year for a wide range of people.

Battling mums, heroic parents and one passionate football fan are already in with a chance of being named the winner of their categories during a ceremony at York Racecourse in October.

They include Danny Bentley, 14, who plays for Tockwith Juniors under 15s and is an aspiring referee and coach in his spare time.

Club secretary Gary Allam nominated the teen for the Spirit of Youth award after increasingly impressing his friends both on and off the field.

Also among the nominees is Margaret Miller, the parent of 33-year-old Amy Miller.

Mrs Miller and her husband saved their daughter's life when they re-started the mum-of-three's heart after she collapsed at home in March.

And former special constable Jerry Holland, who recently retired after 41 years service with North Yorkshire Police, was nominated in the Volunteer of the Year category after recently retiring from his chief officer role.

Community Pride is run by The Press and City of York Council, and the principal sponsor is Benenden.

All nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area. Around three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed.

You can make a nomination online at yorkpress.co.uk/communitypride or by filling in an entry form on this page.

Entries must be submitted by Friday, July 17.
