AN award for inspirational youngsters is being backed by one of the city’s most famous manufacturers. York-based Nestlé will sponsor the Spirit of Youth category at this year’s Community Pride awards.

Penny Wilkinson, a team manager for Nestlé UK’s Consumer Engagement Services, said: “The nominations for the Spirit of Youth Award are always very inspiring and it is always great to hear about the amazing achievements of all the nominees and winners.

“Our role in the community is very important to us and we are delighted to return as a sponsor for the Community Pride Awards again this year.”

The gong is awarded to a teenager aged from 13 to 18 who shows a positive example to their peers, school or college, or shines in the community they are a part of.

Last year’s winner was Tom Sutton, of Fulford, who was praised by the judges because, “He just appears to do everything.”

He is tirelessly involved in his community, and the panel was particularly impressed with the way he has helped his friend, Corey Eastwood, who was born with cerebral palsy.

Tom completed a mini-triathlon by his friend’s side and to helped raise money for a life-changing operation.

Receiving the award at last year’s York Racecourse ceremony, Tom said: “It’s worth it because Corey deserves help and support. It’s an honour to be recognised in this way, and the appreciation that has been shown is really nice.”

Penny added: “The awards are always a great way to recognise young people for the amazing impact they have in their community and sometimes only those close to them get to see the great work they have done.

“By nominating a young person for the Spirit of Youth Awards they get the official recognition they deserve.

“Every year the standard of nominations is so impressive. “Last year’s winner, Tom Sutton, certainly set a very high standard and I know the judges will be once again be looking for someone who has shown true community spirit .”

Community Pride is run by The Press and City of York Council, and the principal sponsor is Benenden.

All nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area. Around three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed.
