THE thriving York Pride celebration went ahead for the third time this year, and was such a success it has been nominated for one of The Press's awards.

The event has been put forward for the Community Project of the Year award, because of the way organisers go beyond staging one day of celebrations.

The nomination said: "The York Pride committee put on a fantastic event each year raising thousands of pounds to do so, they also arrange events for the LGBT community throughout the year."

York Pride ran for the first time in 2012, and this year's event on Saturday, June 21 attracted 1,500 people.

Another Community Pride nominee in York is hairdresser Terry Smith. Terry, who owns and runs Classic Cutz on Fourth Avenue, has been nominated several times over for the Person of the Year award - which goes to someone who promotes pride in their community and the city.

His four nominations speak of his charity work raising money for nearby St Leonard's Hospice, and his bravery in helping the victims of crime - including an elderly lady whose wheelchair was taken by heartless thieves, and a retired postman whose fingers were savaged whilst he was delivering leaflets.

Friend Raymond Crowe wrote: "Terry is a hero and is worthy of this award."
