Winners: Joel Malyon, Oscar Hughes, Ruby Holding, Edie Palmer

One of the most emotional points of the evening came when all the children were announced winners of this category.

Each child showed such levels of courage and optimism, it was impossible to choose one entrant over another, judges said.

“Their bravery should be an inspiration to us all", and they decided to recognise that by naming each one of them Child of the Year.

Ruby Holding, eight, who has undergone major surgery and gruelling courses of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with two rare brain tumours which meant she lost her sight, won for her uncomplaining bravery and happy demeanour.

Edie Palmer, eight, who was struck by meningitis as a toddler and has raised funds for York Hospital, was recognised for her kind-hearted dedication.

Oscar Hughes, eight, of Dunnington, had a brain tumour removed in an 11-hour operation earlier this year. Since then he has started fundraising for the children's cancer charity Yorkshire Candlelighters. He has inspired everyone who has met him with his positive and matter-of-fact attitude.

Another winner of the award was cheerful and much-loved seven-year-old Joel Malyon from Dunnington who very sadly passed away after suffering complications following a transplant.

Accepting his award, his mother, Polly said: “Joel was so looking forward to coming and I think he would have absolutely loved it.”
