York starts gearing up for Christmas

TOURISM chiefs hope York will rival other popular Christmas break locations across the UK and Europe this year with markets, festivals, concerts, an outdoor ice rink and seasonal activities.

A Made In Yorkshire Market will start the shopping season from the November 8 to 18, followed by St Nicholas Fayre , from November 29 to December 2.

York’s Festive Fayre will return from the December 6 to 23, the Festival Of Angels will run on December 15 and 16, and a Christmas Farmers’ Market will be staged on December 14.

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of Visit York, said: “This year York will be more Christmassy than ever before. We’re using traditional wooden huts for all of our Christmas markets, including the St Nicholas Fayre and York’s Festive Fayre.”

Coun Sonja Crisp said: “York not only offers a fantastic selection of Christmas markets alongside independent shops and boutiques but also gives the visitor a whole host of extra Christmas treats to experience, from the traditional to the contemporary, such as carols at York Minster or fun on the ice at the Ice Factor.”

Visitors come to York in their thousands over the Christmas period and last year spent in the region of £50 million.

When do you think Santa goes back to work? We reckon it is about the end of July when lists start being made, gifts selected, Naughty/Nice records updated, etc.

If tourists spent in the region of £50,000,000 in York in 2011 - does that mean we can afford some decent christmas lights and a massive switch on to attract even more money?

We might as well look ahead to Christmas now... not like there's owt left of summer unless it does that really mean turn that the twisted side of me likes, whereby when the kids are off on holidays the weather is pants and as soon as school starts the sun comes out!

Well the Designer Outlet will do well again with the ice rink down there. Didn't their sales go up quite a lot last Christmas while York shops were moaning about the lack of trade?
