THE Selby mother of a four-year-old boy who died of Neuroblastoma has been overwhelmed by the response after she appealed for Christmas gifts for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Toni Cammack's son Thomas died in 2012 after losing a year-long battle against the cancer.

Hundreds of people gathered at Selby Abbey to say a final goodbye to Thomas and pay tribute to the brave youngster.

Another woman, Carly Hudson, from Armley, Leeds, also lost a son, who was also called Thomas, to the same disease within days of Toni's son.

Both boys were treated at Leeds General Infirmary where the families were supported by the children's cancer charity, Candlelighters.

Carly and Toni, who have built a special bond and become great friends, recently appealed to their friends and family on social media for Christmas gifts for children undergoing cancer treatment, and met with an amazingly generous response.

Kate Goldring, fundraising manager at the charity, said she was incredibly moved by the delivery of many presents for the children.

"We are lucky to be supported by Cash for Kids at this time of year as well and we know that we will be giving gifts throughout December," she said.

"It’s very difficult for children and families staying in hospital or undergoing treatment at this time of year. Being able to bring a bit of happiness during this difficult time really makes a difference.”

Toni thanked friends and family who responded so positively to their request for support, and said: “Christmas is still a difficult time of year for us and we wanted to do something positive.”

Candelighters was formed more than 40 years ago to support children diagnosed with cancer and their families. It funds research, equipment, care and much more as well as offering families the chance to go on holiday to escape the clinical environment they often find themselves in.
