AS WELL as providing “the most wonderful selection of locally-produced meat”, the latest competitor for The Press Shop Of The Year title is described as recreating “the essence of days gone by” by happy customers.

Martin Richardson Butchers and Deli, in Woodthorpe, has been nominated for its service with a smile by regulars who are impressed with the customer care and the quality of the produce.

“Martin and his staff are the nicest, happiest, most polite, helpful people I have had the pleasure to be served by over the past few years,” said customer Ann Friend.

“Nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

“A couple of times I have been unable to go in to the shop due to illness and I only have to ring up and they deliver to my door. That's service with a smile."

Robert Waite, another regular, said: “Mr Richardson has obviously styled his shop on quality products, locally-sourced.

“All his staff are knowledgeable and have expert knowledge of the products on sale and, along with their boss, have the personal touch and the time to chat with their customers.

“The queues lining up outside say it all.

“I am nominating Martin Richardson’s shop quite simply because it is the essence of days gone by,” he said.

The Shop Of The Year contest is being held to boost the retail sector as part of The Press York Means Business campaign, with the aim of rewarding exceptional quality of service.

The winners will enjoy the fabulous prize of a luxury night for two at York's Dean Court Hotel, followed by a champagne breakfast, before being whisked to York Racecourse in a limo from White Stretch Limousines to attend The Press Family Raceday on Sunday, September 6, where the shop owners can be joined by members of their staff.
