AN INDEPENDENT carpet shop is celebrating the benefits of British wool during a campaign to promote the natural product.
Style Flooring of York, based in East Parade, Heworth, is celebrating Wool Week which is the annual highlight of the Campaign for Wool. Launched three years ago by Prince Charles the worldwide event takes place every autumn.
Martin Couchie, the owner of Style Flooring, is running a competition for children to name the sheep displayed in his window to highlight the benefits of wool carpets, which Martin said are better for health reasons, better value and safer.
Three quarters of all British Wool goes into carpets, according to The Carpet Foundation, although only 30 per cent of carpets are made from wool.
At Style Flooring, 80 per cent of the carpets stocked are wool because of increased demand, particularly for British wool.
Mr Couchie, who is supporting Wool Week for the third year, said man-made fibres, made from petrochemicals, were becoming increasingly expensive as oil reserves are depleted.
He said: “Many customers want to know whether a wool carpet or one made from man-made fibres is better for people with allergies and asthma.
Wool is non-allergenic so is able to trap dust within its scales. It prevents dust from floating in the home meaning it can be vacuumed later. This helps to keep the air cleaner for breathing.
“People are often surprised to learn that wool carpets are fire retardant because of their high water and nitrogen content. Wool will naturally resist fire and does not melt, drop or emit noxious fumes which are key causes of fatality in fires,” he added.
