TWO brothers have joined forces to create a new recipe box business and are already enjoying award success for their Yorkshire-sourced venture.

Charles and Geoff Allen created Born & Bred this year and are already supplying Yorkshire ingredients and recipe cards to homes the length and breadth of the UK.

The duo, from Thirsk, saw an opportunity to develop the product after realising what they have described as a “wealth of incredible home-grown produce” on their doorstep.

Joining many of their award winning suppliers, the brothers can now boast their own award success after Born & Bred was named Best Specialist Retailer of the Year at the Flavours of Herriot Awards.

Charles Allen said: “For us, discovering local independent suppliers who are specialists in their field and passionate about their work is a real treat.

“We’re proud to source our ingredients from Yorkshire suppliers who grow, rear, catch and hand craft amazing food and drink with great care and dedication.”

In a bid to avoid importing ingredients from overseas, Born & Bred exclusively uses local suppliers the pigs outdoor-reared in the Yorkshire Dales and the Wolds, producing chorizo on a par with its Spanish counterparts, to the Yorkshire Fettle hand crafted in the Vale of York, giving Greek Feta a run for its money.

Geoff Allen added: “Yorkshire has a wonderfully rich history and culture; food is naturally a very big part of that, and we’re excited to be able to share the best produce of our region with the rest of the country.”

Born & Bred’s recipes are created by Yorkshire food and drink champion Stephanie Moon, who started her career at Craven College in Skipton before travelling the world. She was also recently crowned Yorkshire Food Hero at this year’s Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards.

All meat, poultry, charcuterie, fish, cheese, eggs, dairy, bread and condiments in Born & Bred boxes are 100 per cent Yorkshire sourced, from more than 60 independent Yorkshire businesses.

The availability of fresh fruit and veg grown in Yorkshire depends on the season, so the team works with their supplier partners to make sure the recipes include as much Yorkshire grown fruit and veg as possible, whatever the time of year.

Suppliers include Herbs Unlimited and Shepherds Purse, both near Thirsk, Wensleydale Eggs from Leyburn, Hesper Farm Skyr near Skipton, Ramus Seafood Emporium in Harrogate, Yorkshire Drizzle in Holmfirth, Henderson’s Relish in Sheffield, Three Little Pigs in Beverley, Puckett’s Pickle in York, Bracken Hill Fine Foods in Elvington and Wigginton’s Yorkshire Chillies.
