A YORK mobile communications specialist has pledged its support to one of the city's local charities as they both celebrate 30 years in operation.

Cellhire, based in Rawcliffe, has supported York Against Cancer’s annual Golf Day at York Golf Club for several years,.

But because both organisations reach the three decade milestone in 2017, Cellhire decided to add a £1,000 extra donation to the funding it already provides as a sponsor of the Golf Day.

The gift will boost York Against Cancer’s £100,000 anniversary appeal, helping its new mobile chemotherapy unit bring treatment closer to home for patients in outlying areas of North and East Yorkshire.

And the money was the icing on the cake for event organiser Ralph Magee and his team, who made a record £14,000 for York Against Cancer at the Golf Day earlier this month.

Mr Magee, a director at York Against Cancer, said: "We are very grateful to Cellhire for the great support they have given us in what is a landmark year for both of us."

Cellhire chief executive Martyn Stevens said the company was delighted to be backing York Against Cancer. He said:"Cellhire is a company with a long-standing tradition of supporting local charities.

"It’s staggering how much money Ralph and the team raise every year and we think the projects that it is spent on are tremendous, particularly this year, with the charity’s respite home at Filey and the mobile chemotherapy unit."

A range of other sponsors including York estate agents Your Move Anscombs were again among those supporting this year’s Golf Day, held at York Golf Club’s Strensall base.

Mr Magee thanked everyone who had given their time and money to ensure the event was a record-breaking success.

He said: "The weather was absolutely perfect for the event until five minutes after the last group of four players had finished – then there was a violent thunderstorm.

"A great amount of work was put in by so many people, and we are very pleased with the record result, which seems appropriate in our anniversary year."
