A YORK film company which saw its last movie released on DVD around the world is starting work on its next project.

Dark Rift Films is set to start filming Book of Monsters in September, shooting across locations in York and Leeds.

The project is subject to funding being secured, which Dark Rift Films hopes to achieve through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign which is now live with a £45,000 investment target.

The film will be the company’s second horror movie, the first of which, named The Creature Below, was premiered at Frightfest in London last year. It has since secured distribution deals at Cannes and AFM (American Film Market) in ten territories, leading to DVD releases across the world this year

Director Stewart Sparke, who runs Dark Rift Films with writer Paul Butler, said: “Not only will Book of Monsters be an exciting and bloody, action-packed movie, it is also the first horror movie where the audience gets to influence major story elements of the film.

“We wanted to do something unique with our Kickstarter campaign and so every backer who pledges to the campaign gets to vote in six categories of terror, letting you decide which monsters will appear in the movie and more.

“Also, everyone who pledges gets a story credit on the end credits of the movie, which we think is a fantastic opportunity for horror fans to get involved.

“Myself and the rest of the team have been working very hard to put together this campaign and now we are finally able to reveal Book of Monsters to horror fans.”

Mr Sparke describes Book of Monstes as a “ female lead, action packed monster movie drawing inspiration from the cult horror cinema of the 80s and 90s including Scream, Gremlins and Buffy The Vampire Slayer”.

The storyline features six women who must fight off a horde of monsters at an 18th birthday party. Mr Sparke said: “With gory practical creature effects and a dark comedic edge, the film will be a trip back to a time when making it through high school was life or death.”
