A RYEDALE employer has told its workforce of potential redundancies “based on current market conditions”.

CommScope, a manufacturer of telecommunications cabinets, is based on the York Road industrial estate on the outskirts of Malton.

One employee, who did not want to be named, said the notice of possible redundancy had been given to a “good percentage” of the total workforce of about 50 people. They added that a possible final workday given by CommScope was the end of this month.

Formerly Alifabs Cabinets & Ancillaries, the business was acquired by American firm CommScope in 2014.

A spokesman for CommScope said: “CommScope informed employees on June 29 at its Malton, UK facility of potential redundancies based on current market conditions.

“The changes are dependent on the consultation period.

“If no suitable alternative employment can be found then the changes could potentially result in a small reduction of employees at the Malton facility.

“CommScope currently has more than 30 facilities in its global manufacturing and distribution network, with locations all over the world.

“This network enables the company to flex production as customer needs and market conditions dictate.

“This includes adding capacity at some locations and reducing it at others, as we have done continuously throughout our history.”

Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, said: “I will be contacting CommScope to get a clear understanding of the underlying reasons and to make sure that appropriate processes of consultation and employment regulations are being followed.”

At the time of the acquisition in 2014, CommScope, which provides infrastructure for wireless, business and residential broadband networks, said the purchase would “expand its services in the European market”.
