A MALTON consulting engineer has recently taken over the reins as Master of the York Guild of Building.

Alan Mitchell has run Maltech civil and structural engineering practice in Newgate for over 17 years and been involved in projects ranging from many local domestic jobs through to detailed design of the Sage building in Gateshead, Jack Berry House in Malton and designing a steel, multi-storey building in the Philippines.

The York Guild of Building is one of the many guilds that are active in York. It was set up by Sir Peter Shepherd in 1954 as a modern version of a medieval guild. At the time its purpose was to address the shortage of skilled, traditional craftsmen in the city and the concern that we wouldn’t be able to look after some of the most precious buildings in York in the future.
