A NORTH Yorkshire firm is building two new Edwardian style shelters for Whitby’s West Cliff, after the original Grade II shelters were destroyed in storms.

The work has been commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council to replace the damaged existing ones and should be in place by Easter.

They have been built by Whitby company, Rose Engineering and aim to replicate the original shelters as closely as possible.

The ward councillor with Scarborough Borough Council, Joe Plant, recently visited the company premises to see the build in progress.

He said: “The inclusion of impressive features, which will increase the shelters’ resistance to damage from any future severe weather, will ensure they will be around for many future generations to enjoy.” The new shelters will incorporate some of the features salvaged from the original shelters, including decorative brackets and cast iron seats.
