PLANS have been revealed for a new milkshake bar in Ryedale.

A planning application has been lodged for a “milkshake and smoothie parlour” in Commercial Street in Norton.

The change-of-use application is for the unit which currently houses the Norton Video Centre, and details both sit-in and takeaway options.

Applicant Christopher Taylor who is planning the business with his partner Shannon said he had wanted to open something new.

“I was trying to look for something else that Malton and Norton doesn’t have,” he said. “We just thought, we always go to Scarborough and have a milkshake.

“There’s nowhere really in Norton for a milkshake, or a good smoothie. So we’re just trying to tap into that market and just offer something extra in Norton - Malton’s got a nice ice cream parlour with Groovy Moo being established now. We’re going to bring a bit of Scarborough seafront to Norton.”

He said that a key inspiration for the new business is Milkshack in York.

“That’s what we’re basing it on,” he said.

The milkshakes will be chocolate bar flavours, with specials every week along with classic flavours.

The plan is for the parlour to be open through the winter months, as well as the summer. Mr Taylor said they are considering expanding into waffles and doughnuts for this season.

“Not many people may want a milkshake or an ice cream in the middle of winter,” he said.

The planned name will be Shan’s Shake Shack.
