YORK-based SES Engineering Services has been awarded the contract to carry out mechanical and electrical work on the city’s newest student village development.

SES was appointed by main contractor Wates Construction, part of the Wates Group, which acquired SES from the Shepherd Group in 2015.

The contract win follows the firm’s recent completion of work on Vita Student’s Westgate development in the North East.

Located on the site of the former St Joseph’s convent on St Lawrence Street, Vita Student Village York will create 660 student residences through the refurbishment of the original convent and a new build with the construction of multiple accommodation blocks.

On this particular scheme SES’ key challenges will be working across 15 buildings in total and using complex infrastructure and pipework to tie the building services together.

Steve Joyce, SES business director North, said: “Having recently completed a smaller scheme in the North East we are delighted to have been appointed to work with Wates Construction, on what I believe will be an iconic project in the student accommodation sector.”
