THE winner of the Business Personality of the Year title declared that her job was an easy one - due to the number of innovative enterprises in York.

Tracey Smith, the chief executive of York Science Park, said she was “absolutely delighted” with the award.

“I couldn’t do what I do in the city without the support of my fantastic team at the science park, so this is for them, really.

“We have got such amazing, innovative companies in the city that have got such ambition - it really is such an easy job,” she said.

Among the companies that had started at the science park was PureNet, winner of two awards on the night.

All three of the finalists impressed the judges with their drive, enthusiasm and dedication, and for making a real difference in their respective areas.

The eventual winner gained the judges’ vote not only for her leadership and strategic direction at the science park, but also for being a natural networker with a range of contacts across the region.

They said she had a friendly approach coupled with fierce determination, was a major influence and had been involved in many other organisations, including being a Merchant Adventurer, committee member of the Institute of Directors, a member of the advisory board for Science City York, vice-chair of York Professionals and chair of FAB ladies entrepreneur group.

Carolyn Frank also impressed with her championing of her home town through playing a leading role in Helmsley in Business, and for speaking up for rural interests and small enterprises through the federation of Small Businesses - all on top of running her own jewellery business in Helmsley, having had a completely different career before that.

They said Graham Usher had recently overseen a major makeover at York’s Monkbar Hotel and its elevation from three to four stars, and had still found time to take a leading role in a number of York business organisations, and also helped to run an award-winning pub near Selby in his spare time.
