YORK-BASED ISF apprentice Tyler Nockels, pictured, has been awarded highly commended for fabrication and welding at the 2016 Derwent Training Association Awards.

Mr Nockels, 19, who lives in Dunnington, is a first-year apprentice based at Iain Scott Fabrications (ISF) in York. He started with the company in 2015 and works a four-day week as a fabricator and sheet metal worker, spending his fifth day working on the theoretical part of his apprenticeship at Derwent Training, based in Malton.

He said: “I’ve worked hard through my first year of training and have learnt so much from working at ISF. I joined the company with no experience of welding or fabricating and as well as learning new skills, my confidence has also grown. I’ve been able to try a lot of different types of work; my favourite skill is tig welding. I hope that gaining my apprenticeship will lead to a successful career in this industry.”

ISF managing director Iain Scott said: “Part of what makes a business successful is being open to new ideas and responding to changes in the market. Apprentices bring us youth, diversity and different ways of working. We invest in apprentices and in turn they help us to secure the longevity and future of the business.”
