VISITORS to a North Yorkshire power station will be ferried around the site in a pair of new electric vehicles.
Drax Power Station has bought two new electric buggy buses to take visitors to the station around the plant and show members of the public how electricity is produced.
The bus roofs include an image of the compressed wood pellets which are now used in half the station’s generating units.
Rachael Baldwin, visitor centre manager, said she had the idea to change the transport after seeing a buggy bus drive fans around the Etihad Stadium.
She said: “These are specially designed to help people see more detail and experience the sounds and smells of a venue, so visitors will get a real sense of the power station in operation.
“People will be transported around the site more quickly and cleanly and the buses are cheaper to run. You simply plug them into the wall to recharge; just like a mobile phone.”
Drax has been open to the public at weekends since June, and expects more than 12,000 visitors a year, including thousands of schoolchildren as part of their studies.
