A PART of York’s heritage and work on a piece of public art by a Sherburn-in-Elmet company have been recognised at the Yorkshire Structural Awards.
The Walmgate Bar project (Structural and Civil Consultants) won the Small Project Award for the work on the historic southern gateway to York, which has a medieval tower and one of the best preserved barbicans in the country.
The brief included the requirement to prevent collapse of the Elizabethan timber extension in the event of a vehicle strike
The Community Benefit Award went to The Kelpies (SH Structures). The Kelpies, in Falkirk, is a 30-metre-high sculpture of two horses’ heads by Glasgow sculptor Andy Scott, which was visited by more than a million people in its first year.
SH Structures, of Sherburn-in-Elmet, were asked to re-engineer the project to gain cost savings while maintaining the quality of the artists’ vision.
