THE first traditional butcher's shop in York city centre for four years has opened to the public.
Appleton's, which was established in Ripon in 1867, opened in Lendal this week and will hold a celebration for invited guests this evening.
There is a long-standing butcher's stall in Newgate Market, but the last traditional butcher's shop within the Bar Walls was Shambles Butchers, in Little Shambles, which closed in 2012.
Local artist Ann Sotheran has created a special stained glass pig window above the door.
The company specialises in pork products such as cured whole hams, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, faggots and cooked meats such as roast ham.
The conmpany has also said it wants to revive the traditional York Ham.
Appleton's is one of several new businesses opening in Lendal.
Spring Espresso recently opened a new branch in Lendal in addition to its outlet in Fossgate, and The Press also recently reported on plans for a new Belgian-style chip shop in the street.
