THE 100th anniversary of the birth of “James Herriot” is being marked with a black-tie dinner attended by cast members of the TV series based on his best-selling books.

Relatives, friends and colleagues of North Yorkshire vet Alf Wight, who adopted the pen-name James Herriot, will pay tribute to him at the vent on Saturday, October 1.

Ian Ashton, managing director of the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, said: “The Alf Wight 100th anniversary gala dinner will be a fabulous evening and we are delighted that so many of the original cast of All Creatures Great and Small are able to attend.

“The event will bring together so many family, fans, friends and colleagues of Alf Wight and adds up to a fantastic tribute to a very special man, vet and author.”

Christopher Timothy, who played James Herriot in the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small, is due to attend the dinner, along with Robert Hardy , who portrayed Siegfried Farnon, Peter Davidson, who was Tristan Farnon, and Carol Drinkwater, who took the role of Helen Herriot.

Also scheduled to be at the event, at Tennants of Leyburn, are Mr Wight’s son and daughter, Jim Wight and Rosie Page.

“This a real coup, to have all the main cast of All Creatures Great and Small together on this wonderful occasion and will likely never happen again. Alf’s books, films and TV series are the biggest thing to ever have happened to promote the dales and moors of North Yorkshire which have become world renowned as Herriot Country,” said Mr Ashton.
