AN OUTDOORS approach to training has had ‘a massive impact’ on a company which helps to make people’s events extra special.

Founded ten years ago by Richard and Amanda Monaghan, who were looking for something different for their wedding reception, PapaKåta provides Sami teepees for parties and other occasions.

A decade on and PapaKåta, which is based in Sherburn-in-Elmet, has worked at more than 2,000 events across the UK, and has a highly committed and enthusiastic workforce.

As the company grew staff teams who had previously been working 20 minutes away from head office were now working on events three to four hours away.

PapaKåta therefore needed to ensure they were able to provide their staff with skills and confidence to make decisions without having to refer back to senior managers who were no longer close by.

Managing director Tony Ward said: “We were keen to work with a local provider, but we also wanted training that was tailored to the company needs and was delivered in a way that would be exciting and effective for the teepee construction team leaders.

“Our team leaders have come from a range of backgrounds, including the military and construction sector, so we have a really mixed culture of people, but what brings them together is their commitment and practical approach to their work.

“We approached the University of York, who allocated us a training advisor who worked with us to create a tailored management programme.

“What was developed was fantastic, not only did it address our key training needs, but it was delivered through a series of outdoor challenges and exercises which really appealed to our team leaders.”

One of those leaders, Damien Jennings, said: “The only way you get through a day an gruelling day like that - with freezing cold rivers and hardcore tasks - was by helping each other out, pulling together to get through it, and trying to have a laugh.”

Bob Crake, operations assistant, said: “A few of the guys found the practical training pretty tough, but it gave me the chance to take charge of some of the tasks, help to keep their spirits up, and get us all through to the end.”

And Jonny Lambert, another team leader, said: “Some of the challenges we were put into on the day really tested my resolve, but I did actually take away a couple of tips for coping with stressful situations that I’ve already been able to put into practice out on event builds.”

Mr Ward said: “The training has already had a massive impact on the business.

“We have seen changes in attitude, teams are more productive and overall staff are even more enthusiastic and committed to our business.”
