THIS quarter has walked more than a million steps in a month to raise £1,000 to fight cancer.

Staff at York-based social media marketing firm Pick & Mix Marketing have been pounding the city’s pavements, fields and river paths in a month-long challenge.

By walking more than a million steps in May they have raised more than £1,000 for York Against Cancer to spend on trainers to help people exercise after cancer treatment and so speed up their recovery.

Sally Trousdale, director of Pick & Mix, said most people should do at least 10,000 steps a day. “But actually doing that many when you are in an office is easier said than done. The four of us often found ourselves on about 3,500 at 5pm. We really had to get moving in the evenings and on our days off to ensure we reached our target of one million.”

Francine Clee, from York Against Cancer, said: “We all hope that one day cancer will be eradicated, but until that day anyone who can help us to help patients is doing a wonderful thing. A very big thank-you to Sally and her team.”

The charity is supporting post-treatment patients with after-care health, fitness and wellbeing equipment.
