A NEW street market is being set up to help bring fresh life to a York community.
The venture will bring the market featuring mainly specialist food products to the main Front Street, in Acomb, on selected days from next month.
Local traders’ association Acomb Alive is teaming up with the organisers of a number of successful Yorkshire-based markets.
The move has the support of Make it York, the organisation set up to develop and promote the city nationally and internationally.
The first of the new markets will take place on Friday, June 24.
Acomb Alive is looking to bring new life and increasing the ‘buzz’ in the Front Street area.
In the last few years the group initiated the installation of the small Christmas tree decorations above the shops.
This year its members are aiming to add to the festive atmosphere with the installation of Christmas lighting in the main shopping areas.
The market which will trade from 9am to 3pm on selected days, is set to feature producers with an emphasis on artisan foods, including bread, cheeses, meats, pies, cakes and confectionery, as well as some non-food items too.
Sue Hunter, the chairman of Acomb Alive! and owner of Floral Elegance in Front Street, said: “I’m excited to see the market bringing more activity to Acomb Front Street and I believe it is something the residents of Acomb want to see and we hope to see families out on the day.”
Caroline Anderson, the co-organiser of Yorkshire Food Markets, said: “We are delighted to be working on this joint venture.
“Our aim is to offer people the chance to buy quality food and drink from some of the excellent producers we have in York and the surrounding area.
“Acomb is a great place for a market and we believe local shoppers will really enjoy being able to browse and buy a variety of tasty products on their own doorstep.
“We would like to say thank you to Make It York and City of York Council for their support and help in setting up the market.”
Charles Storr, business services manager at Make It York, said: “A regular market in Acomb is great news for the local community.
“It will be a new facility for local shoppers and will help to attract residents from other parts of York and increase the footfall and support other local traders.”
From June onwards this Acomb market will move to a monthly Saturday slot, with the next piloted dates on Saturday, July 23, and Saturday, August 27.
As reported in The Press on Saturday, Barnitt’s in Front Street, Acomb, is closing on June 24.
