A NEW local authority controlled tipi and events business is being set up to fund public services in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire County Council is launching Totem as part of its commercial operations.

The county council's tipis, which are currently used for youth art events are being marketed for the wedding industry, with the local authority hosting a Spring Wedding Fair at County Hall in Northallerton to showcase the tipis dressed for a wedding.

County councillor Gareth Dadd, North Yorkshire's deputy leader, said: "The County Council is making innovative use of its existing resources to create commercial operations to fund vital services,.

"Our tipis make wonderful, exciting venues and Totem is therefore an ideal commercial venture to raise much-needed revenue."

The County Council’s tipis are Stratus 72, also known as a Kata tipis or Giant hat, based on a traditional Scandinavian design.

The Wedding Fair, which is being held on April 30 from 11am to 3pm, will also feature local wedding supplier.

Cllr Dadd said: "I hope anyone planning a wedding will attend the event. Whether you want to create a summer celebration with the sides up, or fancy a winter wonderland with an open fire pit, indoor heaters and warm blankets, the tents can accommodate all ideas, seasons and tastes."
