A NORTH Yorkshire director has been appointed as the new chief executive of North of England Excellence.

Andrew Palmer, 49, from Ripon, will take up his new role in October as the successor to David Teale, who is standing down after eight years in the post.

North of England Excellence is a not-for-profit organisation which helps businesses and organisations across the north to improve their competitiveness, performance and productivity by inspiring, supporting and recognising excellence.

Mr Palmer is currently a regional director of operation for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) based in Leeds.

He joined the CBI in 1999 and has also been its regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, regional director for London, and membership and operations director for Scotland.

Before joining the CBI, he worked as a business reporter on the Yorkshire Post and as a senior laboratory manager at the National Blood Authority.
